Kitenge Backpack
Kitenge Backpack
This beautiful backpack was handcrafted in Tanzania by women in Iringa. The backpack is crafted using traditional methods and traditional kitenge fabric. The backpack was purchased in person, for a fair price, then brought to the US to sell.
Kitenge is an East African cotton fabric printed in various colors and distinctive patterns. It has its origin from Kiswahili kitengele. This vibrant cotton fabric is wax printed, using rotary printing machines. Most often it’s a multicolored, dark wax print on a lighter background. The printing on the cloth is done by a traditional batik technique.
The women who created this handicraft are part of a project called Mama Dunia, under Live Dunia, which aims to support women throughout the world. Mama Dunia aims to work with Women's co-ops in Tanzania to support their livelihood by purchasing and selling their handicrafts for fair prices.
Backpack made for children, features two compartments. One main large compartment and one smaller compartment on the front. Both compartments are well padded.
